Wassily Kandinsky

The artist must train not only his eye but also his soul

Wassily Kandinsky

Wassily Kandinsky

was born on December 16, 1866 in Moscow, in a wealthy family of a businessman in a favorable cultural environment. In 1871 the family moved to Odessa where his father ran his tea factory. There, in addition to a classical grammar school, the boy learns to play the piano and cello and starts drawing with a coach. "I remember that drawing and painting lifted me out of reality," he wrote later. In Kandinsky's works from his childhood we find quite specific colour combinations, which he explains by the fact that "every colour lives through its mysterious life".
