Amedeo Clemente Modigliani (1884 - 1920) was an Italian draftsman, painter and sculptor. Today's fame is mainly based on his nude paintings, which were considered scandalous in his time and only later found acceptance.

Modigliani spent his youth in Italy, where he studied the art of antiquity and the Renaissance, until he moved to Paris in 1906. There he came into contact with important artists like Pablo Picasso and Constantin Brâncusi. His life was marked by lung diseases. In a feverish dream he is said to have recognized his vocation to art, and at the age of 35 he died of tuberculosis. Modigliani's oeuvre mainly comprises paintings and drawings. During his life Amedeo Modigliani had little success with his art, only after his death he achieved greater popularity and his works of art achieved high prices.
